V. Support Services and Miscellaneous Information

D. Libraries

Two major libraries serve the Colgate community. The Everett Needham Case Library, which was built in 1958 and expanded in 1981, houses collections in humanities and social sciences. The George R. Cooley Library, which opened in September 1981, serves the departments of Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics and Psychology. The two libraries have combined collections of approximately 600,000 volumes and 2,200 periodicals and newspapers, in addition to extensive collections of digital databases, government documents, microfilms, and sound recordings. Hours and additional information can be found on the Libraries' web site: http://exlibris.colgate.edu.

1. Borrowing Privileges Circulation staff at either library can activate borrowing status for faculty and their partners using the Colgate ID cards. Faculty loan periods are:

Books Due biannually
Periodicals 2 days
CD-ROMS 2 weeks
Sound Recordings 5 weeks
Govt. Documents 5 weeks

Reference books, atlases and materials requiring special handling do not circulate. Since faculty and students require the best possible access to library materials for courses and research, prompt return of all materials is greatly appreciated. Materials recalled for use by other faculty and students become due immediately.

Overdue and other notices are sent by electronic mail. Faculty and students may renew materials online or at the circulation desks in either library. Materials may be renewed twice. Items overdue for more than one year will be considered lost, and a replacement and processing charge will be assessed.

Colgate faculty also have direct borrowing privileges at Hamilton College, Herkimer County Community College, LeMoyne College, SUNY College of Agriculture and Technology in Morrisville, and SUNY Institute of Technology at Utica/Rome.

2. Requesting Library Materials Faculty are encouraged to submit requests for materials of interest. First priority will be given to materials that support the curriculum. Recommendations should be sent to the Head of Collection Department, Case Library, using one of these options:

· Circle items in publishers' catalogs and include your name to identify the source of the request.
· Use of the forms on the Libraries' website.
· Send e-mail or a memo.

Periodicals requested by faculty are added as funds permit, with higher priority given to titles that will receive heavy use, that are indexed and that will support the curriculum.

3. Library Reserve Faculty members may place books, photocopies, software and sound recordings needed for extensive class use on reserve in Case Library (for humanities and scoial science reserves) or Cooley Library (for science materials). Required reading materials are usually placed on 2-hour reserve. When several students need to share reserve materials for written projects, the 3-day reserve period is recommended.

Reserve lists should be sent to the Case Circulation Department or Cooley Library at least one month before the term begins. After that time, lists will be processed in order of arrival. While every attempt will be made to have materials available for students when needed, this cannot be guaranteed for late lists. If materials need to be ordered, at least eight weeks' advance notice is required. These orders should include the fact that the item(s) will be placed on reserve and the name of the course for which they will be needed. The library will purchase one or two copies per course. Additional copies will be billed to the department.

The Federal Copyright law (PL 94554, October 19, 1976) places certain limitations on the reproduction of reserve materials. For information, contact the Circulation Department.

4. User Services Librarians provide reference services and research support in both libraries. For complex or lengthy questions, faculty are encouraged to make appointments with librarians at their convenience.

Colgate's online catalog, called Mondo, includes citations for all collections in the libraries, reserve reading lists, books on order, the collections of Media Services and a number of reading rooms on campus. It also includes records for all types of collections including sound recordings, computer files, and selected Internet sites and is available on the campus network. The libraries' web site has links to online indexes and databases purchased and licensed by the libraries as well as to selected Internet resources.

5. Interlibrary Loan Items not available on campus can be requested through the Interlibrary Loan Department. Request forms are available in both libraries, on the Libraries' web site, and within many online databases. Materials available from Hamilton College usually arrive within one working day. Materials available within the region take 2-3 days. Other materials will usually arrive within two weeks. Books are delivered to the appropriate department secretary; articles are sent by campus mail.

6. Library Instruction The library is always pleased to assist faculty in developing resource-based assignments and alternatives to term papers that enhance their courses and improve student learning. Faculty often find it helpful to discuss possible research assignments with a librarian beforehand to ensure resources are available and easily accessible to students. We also offer:

· Online catalog workshops and classes on periodical databases and the World Wide Web.
· Customized classes for any course taught (or team-taught with faculty) on request.
· Individual consultations for students and faculty.

Faculty should contact the Head of Library Instruction, the Science Librarian or the library liaison for the faculty's department for these services.

7. Special Collections Department This department has approximately 12,000 rare and unique books and manuscript materials on a wide range of subjects. This collection is particularly strong in 20th century American and British literature. The Henry A. Colgate Collection of Joseph Conrad, the Richard S. Weiner Collection of George Bernard Shaw, the Phyllis and Noel Rubinton Collection of Gertrude Stein and the Elmer Sheets Collection of James Joyce contain important editions and manuscripts of these authors' works. Other outstanding resources include books, pamphlets, manuscripts and letters of the Powys family, T.S. Eliot, George Gissing, John Masefield, the history of printing and private presses, New York State and local history and seventeenth century British history. This Department also houses the University Archives, which consists of 6,000 linear feet of materials related to the history of Colgate.

8. Other Library Facilities The Music Room in Case Library has a large collection of sound recordings which may be used in the room or borrowed for six weeks. The Langworthy Room houses computer terminals for patron use, and the Library Lounge is open for all night studying when classes are in session. The Jerome Room, its adjacent lounge and seminar rooms, may be reserved at the circulation desk. The conference room in McGregory may be reserved through Cooley Science Library. A limited number of faculty carrels are available in Case Library for a period of one term. Application should be made to the Head of Circulation.

9. The Friends of the Colgate University Library Organized in 1960, the Friends of the Colgate University Library organization aims to strengthen the library, enhance its collections and promote its usefulness. Members are invited to attend an annual meeting and an address by a distinguished collector, author or specialist in the book arts. The Friends also sponsor the Colgate Author Lecture Series and the occasional publication of the Philobiblon, which contains articles of interest to bibliophiles.

10. Library Faculty Librarians are members of the faculty and have faculty status. They are committed to meeting the needs of the Colgate community. Faculty members are urged to discuss their requirements, interests, questions, and suggestions with the library faculty and staff.
