Preface

This 19992000 Colgate Faculty Handbook serves as a convenient book of reference for matters of faculty interest and concern and provides new members of the faculty with general information about the college.

There are a number of sources for the policies and procedures described in the Handbook: policies established by the Board of Trustees and the President of the University; Faculty legislation; decisions of the Dean of the Faculty and the Dean's Advisory Council; and actions taken by various campus offices and committees. All matters of policy and procedure, as well as the more generalized descriptions of current procedures, are subject to change by the appropriate University authority.

Questions concerning the Faculty Handbook should go to the Associate Dean of the Faculty. Since it is intended that the Handbook will be revised and published every two years, readers are encouraged to report all corrections, errors of omission or commission, and suggestions for appropriate new material.

As with previous editions, the 19992000 Colgate Faculty Handbook, contains both revisions and new information. Our tradition of building a historical context for faculty policies has again been maintained through the Handbook. In this way, all members of the faculty, new and continuing, have the opportunity to understand and share the origins of Colgate's policies and procedures in areas of faculty affairs.

Several people have contributed to incorporating the revisions into

the current Handbook, including Diane Beach, secretary to the Associate Dean of the Faculty, Helen Payne, Assistant to the Dean of the Faculty, and Gerry Gall, Assistant Director of Communications for Publications, for design and production.

The next few years will present the faculty of Colgate University with important challenges in University governance, faculty development policies, and curricular review. It is my sincere hope that this Faculty Handbook will serve as a foundation for faculty to join one another in addressing these important issues as the decade unfolds.
