This statement became effective in September 1980. It was the result of a recommendation to the President from the Committee on Faculty Affairs (transmitted to President Langdon in a memorandum dated November 5, 1979, and accepted by the President in a memorandum dated November 29, 1979).

These new REGULATIONS ON APPOINTMENTS, TENURE, AND ACADEMIC FREEDOM were adopted by the Faculty at its meeting on November 7, 1977, and approved by the Board of Trustees in January 1978. The new REGULATIONS were intended to update and replace the 1969 "Rules of appointment and Tenure," which had been approved by the Faculty and Board of Trustees effective July 1, 1969. The new REGULATIONS are based on the "1976 Recommended Institutional Regulations on Academic Freedom and Tenure" of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP Bulletin, vol. 62, pp. 184191, 1976), an earlier version of which had served as the basis for the 1969 Colgate Rules. The new REGULATIONS, however, depart from the AAUP's Recommended Institutional Regulations in several important respects, just as the 1969 Colgate Rules had varied from the AAUP's earlier recommendations.

The policies in Section (a) took effect in academic year 198990 and apply to all full-time faculty hired subsequent to July 1, 1987.

or the equivalent terminal degree; all future references to Ph.D. are inclusive of equivalent terminal degrees.

Approved by the Faculty, February 9, 1976.

In its meeting of May 4, 1987, the Faculty voted that results of Student Evaluation of Teaching Forms for first-time participation in a General Education [now titled Liberal Arts Core Curriculum] course will be excluded from materials used for purposes of third-year review and tenure evaluation, unless otherwise requested by the faculty member.

The phrase "fair treatment" includes non-discrimination as defined on page 55.

A faculty member who attends one meeting and participates in another may apply for reimbursement for both meetings but total reimbursement for expenses connected with both trips may not exceed $1000 a year.

While on leave, faculty may not receive salary or supplemental payments from Colgate when the total compensation, including compensation from fellowships or other such sources, exceeds the individual's approved Colgate salary. Additional funds for research, travel, or other expenses may be accepted, but the Dean's specific approval is needed for any income that affects taxable income. Faculty should submit a leave request in the fall of the previous academic year, in anticipation of receiving a Junior or Senior Faculty Leave. The purpose of this is to better project staffing requirements for the following year. A faculty member's request for a leave (e.g. without pay, sabbatical, accelerated, junior, senior, research) shall be approved for no more than two years in a row. No more than a total of three years out of seven may be spent on leave.

See Chapter III, Section C.3.a for an updated procedure on the timing of tenure review after certain leaves.
